Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, where the vampires who killed her mother rule and she and her crew of outcasts must hide from the monsters at night. All that drives Allie is her hatred of vampires, who keep humans as prey. Until the night Allie herself dies…a becomes one of the monsters.

When she hears of a mythical place called Eden that might have a cure for the blood disease that killed off most of civilization, Allie decides to seek it out. Hiding among a band of humans, she begins a journey that will have unforeseen consequences…to herself, to the boy she’s falling for who believes she’s human, and to the future of the world. Now Allie must decide what and who is worth dying for…again.

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa, the first installment in the Blood of Eden series, has garnered significant attention from readers for its unique blend of dystopian elements and vampire lore.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where vampires reign and humans are relegated to the fringes, the narrative follows Allison “Allie” Sekemoto. As an Unregistered human, Allie scavenges for food and evades vampire control. A life-threatening encounter forces her to choose between death and becoming what she despises—a vampire. Opting for survival, Allie embarks on a journey to retain her humanity while navigating her new existence. Her path leads her to join a group of humans seeking the mythical city of Eden, believed to be a sanctuary from the vampire-dominated world.

Readers commend Allie as a resilient and complex protagonist. Her internal struggle between her human morals and vampiric instincts adds depth to her character. Her evolution from a street-savvy survivor to a vampire grappling with her identity is portrayed with nuance. The supporting characters, including the enigmatic vampire mentor Kanin and the compassionate human Zeke, are also highlighted for their well-rounded portrayals and the dynamics they bring to the story.

Kagawa’s depiction of a dystopian society ruled by vampires is noted for its originality and vividness. The hierarchical structures, the desolate landscapes, and the constant threat of “rabids” (mindless, bloodthirsty creatures) contribute to an immersive setting that enhances the narrative’s tension and intrigue.

The novel delves into themes of survival, identity, and the essence of humanity. Allie’s journey raises questions about what it means to be human and the moral complexities of her choices. The exploration of power dynamics between humans and vampires adds a layer of social commentary to the narrative.

Reader reviews are predominantly positive, praising the novel’s fast-paced plot, intricate world-building, and compelling character arcs. The blend of action, moral dilemmas, and a touch of romance is appreciated for keeping readers engaged. Some critiques mention predictable elements in the romantic subplot and occasional pacing issues, but these are generally overshadowed by the novel’s strengths.

The Immortal Rules offers a fresh perspective on vampire fiction, intertwining dystopian themes with a protagonist’s quest for identity and humanity. Its engaging storyline and complex characters make it a noteworthy read for fans of young adult fantasy and dystopian genres.

Editorial Review

Gr 8 Up-In Kagawa's postapocalyptic dystopia, vampires reign. Allison Sekemoto, 17, and her unregistered gang live in the shabby Fringe of New Covington while vampires rule the Inner City with their human pets, drinking blood donated by their Registered subjects. Unregistered humans roam without meal tickets or the Prince's protection, prone to arbitrary violence and starvation. In an act of desperation, Allie and her friends venture into the rabid-infested ruins surrounding the city in search of ancient, abandoned food hoards.

As clouds roll in heavy with rain, the troupe is ambushed by rabids (Red Lung-infected vampires) and all are brutally murdered. Lying ravaged with death fast approaching, Allie accepts an unexpected offer of immortality from Kanin, joining the blood-sucking race that destroyed her family. His guidance and Allie's defiance clash with the vampire's ugly past, leaving her to wander a land swarming with rabids in search of a cure for Rabidism and her own Vampirism.

The zealous heroine's characterization as an anarchist and independent thinker resonates along with classic YA themes of identity and belonging. Her ironic romance with a young man named Ezekiel adds a softer tone to a dynamic and perilous quest. Kagawa devotees can expect lots of bloody carnage in the upcoming movie, as "The Blood of Eden" series has already been optioned by Palomar Pictures.

“Only a writer as gifted as Peter Ho Davies could capture the full weight of a century’s history with such an extraordinary lightness of touch. In his deft hands the dust falls away from a collection of hoary images—the building of the transcontinental railroad, the steaming laundry in Chinatown, the Dragon Lady flickering onscreen—revealing Chinese-American lives and desires in all their freshness, intensity, contradictoriness, and depth. Buoyant yet profound, unsentimental yet affecting, and above all beautifully written, The Fortunes reimagines in thrilling ways what the multi-generational immigrant novel can be.” – Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, author of Madeleine Is Sleeping and Ms. Hempel Chronicles
